Music List for 2021

MUSICAL ENSEMBLES allow students to experience more than simply learning the notes on their music stands. Playing together, listening to others, watching a conductor, determining how your part contributes to the piece, leadership skills, building confidence, reinforcing what is taught in private lessons – all of these aspects allow the student to continue developing her/his musical skills in a fun and safe environment.

INSTRUCTIONS
We will offer 2 levels of harp ensembles this year. Please read the descriptions below to choose your ensemble(s). Your teacher may guide you as to which ensemble is most appropriate for you. Questions? Contact Hope Cowan at hope.k.cowan@gmail.com or Susanna Campbell at harpistsusanna@gmail.com

LEARNING YOUR PART
Your teacher may assist you in choosing an appropriate part from each piece listed for your ensemble. For the most enjoyable and beneficial experience, we ask that you prepare all of your parts before our week begins!

Harp students from different backgrounds and varying experiences will be attending. You may edit and simplify your part to accommodate your level of playing. Please write your name on all of your music.

ORDERING MUSIC
Please order your music so the student has time to prepare her/his part.

PRELUDE ENSEMBLE (lever and pedal harps)

This ensemble is recommended for beginning and intermediate 6th – 8th graders and for those inexperienced in ensemble playing. Music accommodates both lever and pedal harps.

  1. One Prepared FREE CHOICE SOLO

  2. Sardane à Lully by Anne Challan
Once you have registered for the harp festival, we have enough original parts to supply you with this piece. You do not need to purchase your own part. Availability is limited.

  3. Jupiter from ‘The Planets’ by Holst arranged by Janet Jackson Witman in TWO PARTS for all harps
This piece is available locally at Melody’s Traditional Music & Harp Shoppe. Also available for order from Atlanta Harp Center or other harp vendors.

  4. The Ash Grove for 3 harps arranged by Stephen Dunstone
You may download individual parts or all parts from Harp Column Music.

  5. Triptic Dance by Pierre Beauchant
If you have attended our festival before, you have already learned this piece. We traditionally close our Finale concert with all ensembles performing this classic piece. If you do not already own it, Houston’s local harp store Melody’s Traditional Music & Harp Shoppe is among many of the harp vendors who carry this piece.

ALLEGRO ENSEMBLE (lever and pedal harps) and ENCORE ENSEMBLE

This year’s combined ensembles accommodate late intermediate through advanced students typically including 8th graders through our 19 year olds. You are expected to have some experience with ensemble playing and be able to confidently play your part with correct notes, fingerings and counting. Music is playable on lever and pedal harps.

  1. One Prepared FREE CHOICE SOLO

  2. OPTIONAL: One Orchestral Excerpt
We encourage advanced students to prepare a solo and an orchestral excerpt.

  3. Buzzy Chanter from More the Merrier book arranged by Kim Robertson and Laura Zaerr
If you played in the Allegro Ensemble in 2019, you may already own More the Merrier.

  4. Powdered Wigs by Stephanie Curcio
You may purchase this from Houston’s local harp store Melody’s Traditional Music & Harp Shoppe, directly from Stephanie Curcio Publications, or from other harp vendors. Individual parts may be purchased for $3 or all parts for $12.

  5. “Big Apple Swing” for Harp QUARTET from the ‘American Suite’ by Willi Maerz
*Please make sure it is the
Harp Quartet version and not the duet version.
Willi Maerz’s American Suite has four parts with optional electric harp or bass. Harps 2 and 4 may be played on lever or pedal harp, while Harps 1 and 3 require pedal harp. The electric harp and bass part includes a simple bass clef line and some finger snapping.
To be most cost effective, we recommend purchasing just your single part.
This piece is available as a download from Harp Column Music.

  6. Triptic Dance by Pierre Beauchant
If you have attended our festival before, you have already learned this piece. We traditionally close our Finale concert with all ensembles performing this classic piece. If you do not already own it, Houston’s local harp store Melody’s Traditional Music & Harp Shoppe is among the many harp vendors who carry this piece.
